This Southie place has two names that both start with the Letter “M” but there are way more than two things to do. You can watch a ball game, see the first veteran memorial for one American war, or play on the jungle gym to start. What South Boston place am I talking about?
The answer, after the jump…
The “Medal of Honor” or “M” Street Park is between M and N streets off of East Broadway in South Boston. The park is one the largest in Southie and is always filled with kids and pets. In fact, the South Boston Moms Club hosts a group playdate in the playground behind the park every Friday morning. The houses surrounding the park are also some of the prettiest and best examples of the older architecture in South Boston.
The South Boston Vietnam Memorial at the center of the park has the names of every South Boston resident that lost their life during the Vietnam conflict – all 25 of them . Paul Egan, Quartermaster of the Andrew Square VFW 6536, says he remembers when that monument was just an idea among Southie veterans and how they personally visited Southie businesses and individuals requesting donations. Every September, Vietnam Veterans and Boston residents reunite at the memorial to re-dedicate the monument.
